What is perimeter protection?
Perimeter protection uses carefully positioned external detection, cameras or both to identify activity around the property before entry to the main building.
The direct answer
Perimeter protection is security placed around the approach to a property rather than only inside the building. It can use suitable outdoor detectors, camera verification, CCTV, gate contacts and external warning devices to identify activity around driveways, yards, gardens, garages or outbuildings.
The design has to match the site. Public footpaths, pets, wildlife, planting, vehicles, weather and normal staff or family movement all affect where devices should be positioned.
Where it is useful
Perimeter protection is particularly useful where the customer wants an earlier warning or where the main risk sits away from the building.

Detection and CCTV serve different purposes

A camera alone is not automatically perimeter protection, and an outdoor detector does not replace the evidence and overview a well-positioned CCTV system can provide.

The survey should consider range, mounting height, masking, crossing routes, lighting, network coverage, communication paths and whether areas need to be armed independently.
